June 23: Jean Stern on the life and art of Sam Hyde Harris

In this lecture, art historian and LAM Curatorial Fellow Jean Stern will discuss the life and art of Sam Hyde Harris (1889-1977) in a slide-illustrated lecture. Harris was born in England and came to the U.S. in 1904.  He is remembered as one of the most active commercial illustrators in Los Angeles and later in his career, as one of the most popular art instructors.  In the 1920s, he designed the logo for Van De Kamp’s Bakery and numerous posters for Southern Pacific, Union Pacific and Santa Fe Railroads.  He painted rural environments of Pasadena and Los Angeles, as well as scenes of San Pedro Harbor, Sunset Beach and Newport Beach.  After he retired in the 1950s, he painted California desert scenes with his friend James Swinnerton (1875-1974).

The lecture consists of about 90 slides and lasts approximately 50 minutes with time afterwards for discussion and questions.
