Cabaret at UCI

November 18, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm

$10 – $25

Set in a tumultuous post-World War I Berlin during the rise of the Nazi Party, Cabaret is a compelling narrative that follows American writer Clifford “Cliff” Bradshaw. His life takes an unexpected turn when he becomes romantically entangled with the enigmatic cabaret performer Sally Bowles, whom he encounters at the vibrant Kit Kat Club. However, as the ominous shadow of Nazi occupation looms larger over Germany, Cliff and Sally find their relationship increasingly entwined with a series of dire and violent events.

Cabaret’s narrative serves as a poignant commentary on the erosion of free speech and civil liberties. Against the backdrop of Berlin’s transformation under Nazi rule, the play delves into the chilling consequences of a society’s descent into authoritarianism. The nightclub itself becomes a microcosm, vividly illustrating how individuals turn to art and performance as their chosen means of expression, only to witness these forms of liberation gradually stifled and silenced as oppressive forces tighten their grip on the city.
